THE DANGER OF DISCOURAGEMENT
KEY TEXT: Joshua 1:9 KJV: “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD: Discouragement often begins when our eyes shift from God to circumstances. Satan uses discouragement as a tool to weaken a believer’s relationship with God. Elijah, after his great victory at Mount Carmel, became fearful and discouraged when Jezebel threatened him, forgetting the God who had just answered by fire (1 Kings 19:3–4). Discouragement blinds us to God’s past faithfulness and present promises. Whenever you feel discouraged, remember that the Lord has commanded us to be strong and courageous, for He is always with us.
YOUR SPIRITUAL CONDITION: The root of discouragement lies in unbelief, fear, and misplaced focus. When a believer dwells more on problems than on God’s Word, spiritual weakness sets in. Discouragement, if not checked, leads to depression, prayerlessness, and even rebellion against God. The children of Israel became discouraged by the way in the wilderness and spoke against God and Moses (Numbers 21:4–5). A discouraged spirit easily slips into murmuring and complaining, which grieves the Holy Spirit.
THE VOICE OF YOUR CONSCIENCE: Discouragement makes the voice of conscience faint, replacing it with voices of fear, failure, and self-pity. When Elijah was discouraged, he asked for death rather than life, showing how despair clouds judgment (1 Kings 19:4). A discouraged conscience can push a believer to speak words of doubt and hopelessness. Beloved, God is not the author of discouragement. Ask Him to revive your conscience and strengthen your inner man so that you may overcome despair with faith, hope, and courage.
PRAYER:
Lord, deliver me from every root of discouragement, and help me to keep my eyes on You in every situation, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.
REFLECTION:
Psalm 42:11 KJV: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
