FOUR AREAS OF SELF EXAMINATION IN YOUR CHRISTIAN LIFE

KEY TEXT: Acts 24:16 KJV: “And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.”

EXAMINE YOUR CONSCIENCE: What is your conscience convicting or reminding you of? Maybe we silenced our conscience when it was reproving us of sin, or ignored our conscience when it rebuked us at the way we reacted to that situation. Our conscience can be troubled. It can convict us of wrong actions, but it is up to us to obey and acknowledge its voice or harden our hearts and go against the right thing to do. Examine if your conscience still speaks to you. If it does not speak again, that is a danger zone. If you are in that category, pray for a revived conscience. (Acts 24:16; 1 Corinthians 11:28–30)

EXAMINE YOUR IDOLS AND AFFECTIONS: Examine if there are any idols that have little by little crept into your life. What is now calling for your worship and attention? Is your zeal for the things of God quenched, or is your fire still burning? Do you still have joy in the service of the Lord, or are you being dragged to do God’s work? Examine if your utmost love is truly Jesus. Are you slowly slipping back to the world and becoming a worldly Christian? There will be a time when it will be too late, so examine yourself now and keep yourself from idols. (1 John 2:15–17; 1 John 5:21; James 4:8)

EXAMINE YOUR WORDS AND RESTITUTION: Reflect on your manner of speech. What are the things that come out of your mouth? The tongue has power for both good and evil. We cannot offer blessings in the morning and curses in the evening, or speak ill of others behind their backs. Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof on the day of judgment. Examine your cleanliness before God and man. Are there restitutions undone? Have you borrowed and not returned? The Bible says, owe no man anything but to love one another. Do the needful and set things right before it is too late. (James 3:9–10; Matthew 12:36; Romans 13:8)

PRAYER:

O Lord, I receive the grace to be in constant self-examination of my walk with you so I will not be disappointed at last, in Jesus Christ's mighty name. Amen.

REFLECTION:

1 John 5:21 KJV: “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”

PRAYER POINTS:

1. O Lord, I ask that You purify and revive my conscience by the blood of Jesus Christ. Let my heart remain tender toward Your corrections, and deliver me from a seared or hardened conscience, that I may walk uprightly before You and before men, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen. (Acts 24:16; 1 Corinthians 11:28)

2. Father, by Your Spirit, reveal and uproot every hidden idol and misplaced affection in my life. Restore my first love, rekindle my zeal for You, and draw my heart wholly back to Jesus, that nothing will rival my devotion to You, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen. (1 John 2:15–17; 1 John 5:21)

3. Lord, set a watch over my mouth and guard the door of my lips. Let my words bring life, grace, and edification. Deliver me from idle, corrupt, and double-tongued speech, and help me to glorify You with every word I speak, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen. (James 3:9–10; Matthew 12:36)

4. Righteous Father, grant me the humility, wisdom, and courage to correct every wrong, complete every restitution, and walk in integrity before You and men. Let nothing stand as a witness against me, and help me to live a life that pleases You, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen. (Romans 13:8; Luke 19:8)
